Vancouver classification is useful. If implant is stable & well osseointegrated, This # which falls in B1 category with no loss of bone stock, plate osteosynthesis rather than the formidable revision is preferred. I would like to quote following article which is worth going thro'.
Indirect Reduction and Plate Fixation, without Grafting, for Periprosthetic Femoral Shaft Fractures About a Stable Intramedullary Implant -----William
M. Ricci, MD1, Brett R. Bolhofner, MD2, Timothy Loftus, BA1, Christopher Cox, BA1, Scott Mitchell, MD3 and Joseph Borrelli, Jr., MD1 JBJS(A)-2005.
The detail of their technique is well described in the J. Bone Joint Surg.
Am., September 1, 2006; 88(1_suppl_2): 275 - 282.
By the way, the Mennen type plate with clamp like architecture is given up & no more used for the periprosthetic #s.
regards,
If you are interested I can send you the full text pdf article on the personal mail address
